Did you know that fanatical approaches to losing weight have a less than 5 percent chance of succeeding? Extreme, fanatical approaches to weight loss goes to the heart of what we might call “magical thinking." If you drastically curtail your caloric intake or decide to go on a fast, in time your body will respond by going into a starvation mode. In short, your metabolism will slow down, and (instead of burning fat for energy) your body will begin to protect your fat stores by burning lean muscle. This depletion will lead to an even more significant lowering of your metabolism, more lethargy, less energy, causing you to need fewer calories to survive. Extreme, rapid weight loss can cause gallstones, dehydration, irregular menstruation, muscle and hair loss, loose skin, and even disastrous cardiac arrhythmias.
It’s hard to be patient with weight loss, especially if you’re trying to look good for that wedding or summer vacation, but keep in mind that moderation, especially in your expectations, is the key to lifelong weight mastery. Nothing will sabotage your efforts more quickly than impatience, pessimism, or the hopelessness that comes from unrealistic expectations.
