“Life is only heartache.” “I can’t do anything right.” “Nothing ever works out for me.” Sound familiar? If so, recognize that insecurity is notorious for narrowing our perceptions. Rather than seeing the bigger picture, with possible alternatives and solutions, tunnel vision limits you to one pessimistic aspect or component of a difficulty, thus allowing you to feel vindicated for quitting or giving up.

After all, if you have no positive expectations, then you’re not going to be disappointed. And if you’re not disappointed, then you’re not going to feel out of control. Tunnel vision is designed to protect you not only from getting disappointed, but also from having to take more responsibility for your life. The healthy alternative is to recognize that life is never limited to one point of view, one option, or one solution.
