I recall a yoga class I took a few years back. We were discussing the value of meditation when a frustrated student complained, “Whenever I try to meditate, my thoughts run wild. I can’t stop them from distracting me.” Rama, our instructor, thought for a moment and responded, “Your thoughts are like monkeys, jumping from limb to limb, screeching, chirping, making a commotion. In order to meditate, you have to learn to tame your monkeys!”
If you’re going to change the course of your life, if you’re going to assert your will and live your intentions to lose weight and achieve lifelong weight mastery, you must learn to tame your monkeys! When it comes to destructive eating, monkeys-running-wild thinking can take many forms and lead you down many destructive paths. The chatter of compulsive thinking may send you running into the kitchen; the pathetic thoughts of feeling denied may make you feel victimized; or the cacophony of black-and-white excuses may precede a mental “slip”: I can’t. It’s too hard. I’ll never lose weight. No matter what you call it, it’s all mental monkey business!
