Depending on the study you read, anywhere from 65 to 95 percent of diets eventually wind up failing. There can be no conclusion other than the fact that dieting alone just isn’t the answer. It’s not whether you can lose the weight (most diets accomplish this to a greater or lesser degree) or how you lose the weight (whether it’s reducing your carbs, counting your calories, or eating grapefruit). In the long run, it all comes down to whether you’ve managed to break the destructive habits that invariably wind up ruining and ruling your life. Real, lifelong weight mastery isn’t a secret, yes, you’ll have to work at it. But at least you’ll be empowered to realize that the outcome—weight mastery—is choice, not chance.
