Yes, anxiety is common--very common. Some anxiety is unavoidable, such as an impending operation or a tax audit, but the kind of anxiety that most people wind up in therapy for is what I call insecurity-driven anxiety. We live in a very competitive, compulsive, and driven society. When, because of insecurity, we begin a life of control (i.e., worry, rumination, perfectionism, etc.) it's only a matter of time before we become depleted and experience symptoms of anxiety.
