Why we need Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving gives us a rare pause in a world that constantly pulls our attention toward what’s wrong or missing. When we stay caught in that negative focus, the brain’s stress circuits stay switched on, feeding anxiety, tension, and emotional fatigue. But shifting toward gratitude activates neural pathways linked to calm and resilience—gratitude and chronic worry simply can’t coexist.

The benefits are real and measurable. Genuine appreciation lowers stress hormones, improves sleep, boosts immunity, and steadies our mood. By contrast, a lack of gratitude keeps the nervous system in a subtle state of alarm, making us more reactive and more vulnerable to insecurity. Even brief moments of thankfulness begin to reset that imbalance.

This Thanksgiving, take a moment to actually feel your gratitude. Notice the people, comforts, and small daily blessings that support you. Turning toward appreciation—even for a few seconds—interrupts the mind’s negative bias and opens the door to greater peace and presence throughout the holiday season.
